Mulan Jr

DJR School of Performing Arts, Devonport Playhouse, 26th – 28th October 2017

DJR School of Performing Arts presents ‘Mulan Jr’, a Disney tale about a young girl who is trying to find her place in the world. For fans of the film, this is definitely worth watching! Every cast member had strong characterisation, influenced by their movie star counterparts.

Mushu played by Summer Nelson is a budding star. She has incredible stage presence and confidence. Summer can sing, dance and act with a style of her own. Her cheeky dance moves and excellent comedic timing had the audience roaring with laughter.

The ancestors were not so amused by naughty Mushu but they had no choice but to send her to help Mulan. The ancestors were all brilliant narrators, speaking clearly and guiding us through the story.
The hairstyles and costumes in this show deserve commendation. Mushu’s dragon spikes and the braids and buns adorned by the cast all helped transport the audience to Mulan’s world.

Mulan as Shannah Russell has clearly become more confident with her voice, beautifully singing ‘Reflections’ and effectively using light and shade in her vocals. It was a joy to watch her explore the character of Mulan.

The best ensemble song of the night was ‘Keep ‘em Guessing’ which was deleted from the original Disney movie. During this song Mushu helps Mulan learn to act like a man. Joined by an ensemble of girls, they performed a high energy dance routine while singing this fun song.

Later in the show the boys sing the same song and appeared to have equally as much fun. They got into character and strutted confidently about the stage. The entire cast of Mulan Jr performed slick, fast dance routines with smiles and plenty of dynamism.

DJR School of Performing Arts took us on an exciting journey through China. If you are looking for a night of escapism make sure to get your tickets for ‘Mulan Jr’.
