Peter Pan Jr

DJR School of Performing Arts, Devonport Playhouse, 17th – 18th September 2015

DJR School of Performing Arts present ‘Peter Pan Jr’. The same classic tale, told from pint sized performers. The ensemble were professional throughout the performance and were clearly passionate about the production.

Jessica Luscombe, who played Wendy Darling, had a pleasant singing voice and sang a beautiful rendition of ‘Your Mother and Mine’. Her brothers, John Darling (Bailey Cameron) and Michael Darling (Christopher Jewell) were extremely enthusiastic and led the lost boys in ‘We’re Following the Leader’.

The hero of the story, Peter Pan (Ethan Hunter) had mastered stage fighting which came in handy because Captain Hook (Kieran Pruett) fought him at every chance he had. Kieran gave great characterisation to the role of Hook, especially when the crocodile appeared. The pirates sang an amusing version of ‘Never Smile at a Crocodile’. This number was well choreographed.

By Peter’s side was Tinkerbell (Holly Scholes). She had sass and a fabulous stage presence. She enjoyed trying on John’s hat, much to the amusement of the audience. She narrated parts of the story which allowed the audience to empathise with the regret she felt at having betrayed Peter.

The scenery and special effects were impressive. The producers created a clever illusion when Peter Pan, Wendy, John and Michael fly to Neverland by having a partially transparent curtain and the ensemble of fairies singing and dancing in front.

The production ended with Peter Pan actually flying off the ground with the whole cast singing their hearts out. DJR School of Performing Arts produced a sweet version of a classic story.
