Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr

City Of Plymouth Youth Theatre Company, 7-8th February, Devonport Playhouse

Thoroughly Modern Millie is a toe-tapping musical adventure set in New York City. Millie (Megan Shorey) is determined to be a modern girl, and by modern I mean 1922, but when it comes to it will she follow her plan or her heart?

This fun story is filled with exciting 20s inspired songs, Charleston-style dance moves, and fabulous 20s dresses.

Millie begins working as a secretary with a group of other girls and her first task is to prove her speed at typing. Millie reads back a letter, accompanied by the girls, which has been dictated by her future boss in ‘The Speed Test’. The song increases in speed as Millie and the cast prove their typing speed as well as their note taking skills. Their diction remained clear throughout this fast paced song and the cast received a well-deserved cheer when the letter was completed. While the girls were sat at their typewriters they performed dance moves beneath their desks which certainly got the audience’s toes tapping.

This tongue-in-cheek show explores the delights of young love as well as the dangers of the big city. Josh Colman as Trevor Grayson The Third and Corlissa Waites as Miss Dorothy proved their impeccable comedic timing in the song ‘Ah! Sweet Mystery Of Life’ in which they sing about love at first sight in a purposefully exaggerated style.

This talented group of youngsters presented a highly enjoyable show with a charming story and plenty of catchy songs. If you are looking for something to lift your spirits then escape to the hustle and bustle of New York City in the 20s with the cast of Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr.
